Project Management
Interim CIO/CTO Technology Strategy Technology Tune-up Project Office Project Management Other Services

There are projects,

Then there are big projects,

And then there are make-or-break projects.

You need these projects,

You need them to be competitive, open up new markets and preserve margins.

These projects must be successful.

(no problem)

The Bigger the Badder

The bigger the project, the bigger:

bulletThe rewards of successful implementation.
bulletThe complexity and difficulty of the work.
bulletThe cost, time, and level of sophistication required .
bulletThe risk for failure.

Its a tough recipe for a sponsoring executive to swallow, with equal parts exhilaration and terror.

Project Leadership - A Key Ingredient for Success

Executives will wisely seek to acquire success factors and reduce risks.  Perhaps the most critical action is finding the right leadership for the project.

There are two, key leadership roles:

bulletAll projects depend on the overall project manager.
bulletLarger projects also need oversight and risk mitigation services from a senior professional.

With many years of successful project experience, Ascendant Services can help you fill these two roles.  We can fill these roles when the project starts, or can help you assess the need for a mid-stream change.

Criteria for an Ascendant Project Manager

Your project depends on selecting the right project manager.  We want to make sure this happens.  So, we're very selective about who we present to you as a candidate to lead your project.

Each Ascendant Project Manager meets the following, demanding criteria:

bulletA track record of successful implementation.
bulletBroad and deep technology experience; easily capable of earning the respect of technical teams.
bulletDeep understanding of business requirements and the needs of sponsoring executives.
bulletLong experience implementing many technology projects.
bulletMeaningful work experience in different project roles (e.g.: analyst, developer, quality assurance, project manager, change leader, executive sponsor, etc.).
bulletExperience with projects at all lifecycle phases; capable of identifying and addressing risks as they emerge.
bulletStrong commitment to a mature project methodology, and Ascendant values.
bulletReady access to relevant subject matter experts.

Ascendant Project Leadership Services

We are proud to offer the following, complementary service offerings:

Project Management

We have qualified Project Managers available on a part-time and full-time basis to lead your project.

Program Management

A program is, in essence, a large project; one large enough to merit several project managers and someone to manage those project managers (the Program Manager).  The Program Manager reports to executive sponsorship, which can be a committee of executives due to the size of initiative.  Due to this reporting relationship, and because the Program Manager has a layer of capable managers to execute, this role has a different nature than the Project Manager's.  It is more strategic, communicative, and oversight in orientation.

The Program Manager:

bulletDirects the efforts of Project Managers and other senior project professionals.
bulletProvides inter-project alignment and coordination.
bulletLeads oversight and risk mitigation activities (i.e., Program Office, Risk Management).
bulletFacilitates and communicates with all major stakeholders (executive leadership, customers, regulatory groups, project teams, etc.).
bulletEnsures consistency of process and approach between projects.
bulletTakes overall responsibility for program success.
bulletPrepares and manages a master budget.

Ascendant Services has senior practitioners who can serve as experienced Program Managers.

Oversight & Risk Management

There exists a substantial gap between the filling the Project and Program Manager roles.  To fill that gap, we offer a service, for your project or program, that:

bulletProvides oversight and tracking activities
bulletIntroduces success factors into your project and development methodologies
bulletSpots issues and risks that can derail your initiative
bulletEnsures that issues and risks are being addressed in a timely and effective manner

Our approach to oversight and risk management has two major elements:

  1. We implement and operate (with your staff or ours) a Program Office.
  2. We form and chair a Risk Management Committee, which can greatly reduce the chance of project failure.  The goal of this committee is to:
bulletIdentify the risks that can derail the initiative
bulletAssign ownership for monitoring and addressing these risks
bulletFacilitate owners in the development of risk mitigation plans
bulletMonitor for the emergence of risks
bulletProactively and reactively manage risks and their consequences

This service can be valuable in support of a Program Manager or when a full-time Program Manager is not required.  Project  Managers are generally too busy to effectively provide oversight, and everyone can benefit from good coaching.  Involving Ascendant Services in oversight and risk management can yield real benefits, offload your Project Managers so they can focus on core activities, and transfer new capabilities to your team.

Application Readiness Tune-up

One of our core service offerings is the Technology Tune-up, a set of assessments that delivers roadmaps to maximize your technology investments.  One of these assessments determines Application Readiness.   This Tune-up presents you with the actual status and likelihood of success of an "in-flight" project, plus gives you specific and actionable suggestions as to what (if anything) to change.

The Application Readiness Tune-up is an excellent place to start if you are concerned about a critical project.

The Ascendant Project Management Methodology

Our Project Managers adhere to best practices in project management.  These practices are proven to yield more successful projects (i.e., projects that are timely, cost-appropriate, meet expectations).  Key elements of our approach are:

bulletRequirements and acceptance focused
bulletDetailed project planning and performance measurement
bulletVery disciplined about scope and complexity creep
bulletAlways put successful delivery above flash
bulletCommunication and inclusion
bulletEstablish and hold to a development methodology
bulletRigor at each step of the process avoids unacceptable costs later on
bulletTimely deployment of subject matter experts
bulletActive use of risk management
